Perfusion hints

Body surface area (BSA)

BSA(m2) = (height (cm) x weight (kg)/3600)

BSA (m2) = (height (cm) x weight (kg) - 60

Body flow (Lpm)

Flow (Lpm) = 2.4 CI (Cardiac Index, L/min/m2) x BSA

CI = 100 / Hb x 1 / (SaO2 - SvO2)

Flow related to temperature

  • 37 °C ---- 2.4 (CI)
  • 34 °C ---- 2.2 (CI)
  • 30 °C ---- 2 (CI)
  • 28 °C ---- 1.8 (CI)
  • 24 °C ---- 1.4 (CI)

Roller pump delivery volume

1/4 inch tubing - 6 ml (volume per RPM)

3/8 inch tubing - 26 ml (volume per RPM)

1/2 inch tubing - 45 ml  (volume per RPM)

General tips

  • For every one degree drop in body temperature there is a 7% reduction in oxygen consumption
  • Arterial O2 content (CaO2) = ([SaO2 x Hb x 1.31 ml/dl blood]) + ([0.003 ml/dl blood per mmHg x PO2)
  • DO2 (O2 delivery)= CO (cardiac output) x (1.39 x [Hb] x SaO2 + (000.3 x PaO2))
  • VO2 (O2 consumption)= CO x (CaO2 – CvO2)

HCO3 Dosage based on base deficit

HCO3 needed (mEq) = 0.3 x Wt (kg) x base deficit (mEq/L)

Heparin dose

Body weight (kg) x 3

Body weight x 4 (PTE)

Urine output

Normal urine output: 1-2 ml/kg/hr
