Intra-aortic ballon pump therapy is used to help the heart to pump more blood. The aim of this device is to increase myocardial oxygen supply and decrease myocardial oxygen demand.
The intra-aortic balloon is inserted in the femoral artery and positioned about 2cm below the left subclavian artery and above the renal arteries. The ballon inflates and deflates just before the closure of the aortic valve (dicrotic notch), this will help the heart to pump more blood into the coronary arteries and reduce afterload.
